Measure slope in a consistent unit
Manufacturers may state slope in percent or degrees. These are not interchangeable: a percentage describes rise divided by horizontal run, multiplied by one hundred. A number that looks larger can therefore represent the same slope. Use a consistent unit when making your comparison and follow the manufacturer's recommended measurement method.
Measure the steepest relevant areas, not only the average grade across the garden. Pay attention to changes at the bottom and top of slopes, where the chassis must transition. A lawn can meet a broad inclination rating while still presenting a difficult local obstacle. Record the slope together with its location and the direction the mower would need to travel.
Separate the working area from the boundary
A mower's maximum slope inside a working zone may differ from the limit near its boundary. The ECOVACS O1000 RTK specification, for example, lists separate figures. This distinction matters because stopping and turning near an edge is a different task from driving through the middle of a lawn.
Mark slopes next to paving, retaining walls, ponds and neighboring property. Ask the manufacturer about the required setback and exclusion arrangement for the exact location. Do not interpret obstacle detection or all-wheel drive as permission to ignore boundary instructions. If a seller cannot explain the applicable limit, leave that section outside the automated mowing plan until it is clarified.
Evaluate terrain together with traction
A slope rating does not tell the whole story about a lawn's surface. Soft soil, exposed roots, bumps and abrupt transitions should all appear in your assessment. Ask whether the stated rating depends on dry conditions and what the manual says about operation after rain. Avoid extrapolating from a demonstration on uniform artificial turf.
All-wheel drive is a feature to investigate when terrain demands it, not a guarantee of trouble-free operation. Compare maneuvering space and weight as well as the drive system. Think about how you would recover the mower from a difficult spot without carrying it along an awkward route. A machine that frequently needs rescue is not delivering the convenience you bought.
Use a conservative shortlist
Begin with products whose documented operating envelope covers your measured lawn. Then check the boundary rules, cutting height and setup. The Dreame and Mammotion pages linked below provide starting points for model-specific research. Their published capabilities are not independently verified performance results from this site.
If only a small part of the garden is problematic, it may be more sensible to exclude that section and maintain it separately than to buy around a maximum climbing claim. Consider whether the remaining automated area is valuable enough. Choose based on a complete plan for the property, including the awkward areas, and keep all manufacturer operating restrictions attached to that plan.
